The arts are large part of island life. Galleries abound and studio tours are available on most of the larger islands. Musicians, poets, dancers and performers take the stage on islands venues ranging from Salt Spring's Artspring, to island community centres, or local restaurants, bars and cafes. The quality of the performances are often excellent and difficult productions are not shied away from. Festivals include the large lamb barbecue on Saturna, the Galiano Wine Festival, Gabriola's Sand Sculpture Competition and of course the fall and harvest fairs at summers end on most of the islands. Not surprisingly the areas market places are perhaps the biggest draw on the islands, given the unique and varied items produced locally.
