Salt Spring Island is located just off the coast of Vancouver Island in the Strait of Georgia. You'll find more artists, artisans, craftspeople and musicians on this small island than any one area has a right to. Perhaps the progressive thinking and endless debates that are characteristic of the island, are the reason they attract so many artists. Of course the laid back lifestyle along with the rugged natural beauty and exceptional weather may also have something to do with it. You'll find somewhere in the neighbourhood of 35 studios, with artists engaged in a wide variety of expression, all open to the public. The local tourism office has a brochure with descriptions of the artists and their work as well as a map and an outline of the hours they keep. It's important to know that the studios keep a variety of hours and some can be visited by appointment only. Consult their websites or give them a call before setting out.

Getting Here Salt Spring Island is accessible only by water or air. Regular scheduled ferry service is available from Swartz Bay (Victoria) or Crofton (Duncan) on Vancouver Island as well as from Tsawwassen (Vancouver) on the lower mainland of British Columbia. A short hop in a small plane will also take you to the island from Victoria, Vancouver or even Seattle. Many people access the area (particularly in the summer) by private boat as well. Victoria can be accessed from Washington State via regularly scheduled ferry service. |
