Ontario's Conservation Areas

Ontario's conservation areas are often overlooked by visitors to the province. Given the extensive provincial park system and the number of national parks in Ontario, one can understand the oversite but don't miss an opportunity to visit, you'll find every type of outdoor activity imaginable. In total there are 38 conservation authorities in charge of over 300 hundred conservation areas encompassing over 44,000 ha (108,600 acres). The conservation lands are mostly in the southern reaches of the province along the St Lawrence River and the Great Lakes, but there are several in the norther region as well.

Nature observation is probably the most popular activity available in Ontario's conservation areas. The wetlands of Luther Marsh, (Grand River) attract a wide variety of birds while the Beamer Memorial (Niagara) is famous for the wealth of raptors that ply the cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment.

Long Point of course is well know among birders as a great observation spot during migration. Hikers have endless trails to choose in most of the the consevation areas. Backpackers are not left out since dozens of the conservation areas have access to the 782km Bruce Trail and other long distance trails in Ontario.

The protected water sheds create great opportunities for canoeing with many areas having white water, including the Grand (Grand River) and the Credit Rivers (Credit Valley). Canoe routes abound including the Saugeen (Saugeen Valley), the Maitland (Maitland Valley)and the South Nation rivers (South Nation). Mountain bikers will be pleased to discover McCauley Mountain (Prince Edward - Quinte), Kelso (Halton) and Albion Hills (Toronto) which offer excellent trails.

Rattlesnake Point (Halton) is of course one of the best known climbing areas in the province and its neighbours Mount Nemo and (Kelso) have lots more routes in the same area. Front country camping is available at dozens of the conservation areas including Fifty Point (Hamilton), Indian Line (Toronto), Backus Heritage (Long Point) along with many other areas, in fact there are over 4000 campsites in the conservation lands many with full services.

In the winter you'll find cross country ski trails and snowshoeing in many conservation areas including Elora Gorge (Grand River), Binbrook (Niagara Peninsula)and Long Sault (Central Lake Ontario) as well as dozens more.
