Fulford
is the first stop for the majority of visitors to Salt Spring. The
village is located at the south of the island on the edge of Fulford
Harbour. The ferry terminal for the Swartz Bay-Fulford Harbour (Victoria)
run is located here. Although the Village of Ganges is bigger, Fulford
has its own distinct charms. Make a point of exploring the area,
which has a variety of shops, restaurants and accommodations. The
Rock Salt Cafe on the water's edge has recently been honoured by
a listing in the prestigious guide "Where to Eat in Canada".
Organic coffee and baked goods are available from the fascinating
Morning Side Bakery just up the street. The Fulford Pub is just
a short distance from the village. A little passed the pub you find
two of Salt Spring's fine wineries. If your looking for some interesting
shops stop in to Stuff & Nonsense and Jambala, where you find
a wide variety of unique items. There are several Bed and Breakfast
establishments here as well, should you decide to spend a few days. |

For the outdoor
types, Fulford dock and Drummond Park are good launch sites for kayakers
to go exploring Russell Island. For the more experienced, Princess Margaret
Island has wonderful wilderness campsites accessible to kayakers (sailors
as well). Both islands are a part of the Gulf Islands National Park. Not
far from town you'll find a wonderful trail which will take you up Reginald
Hill to a spectacular view of the harbour with Mount Maxwell in the distance.
A little further on you can access the beautiful shoreline trail which
takes you around the point. Not to be missed is Ruckle Provincial Park,
which is about a fifteen minute drive from Fulford. Burgoyne Bay, another
of the islands provincial parks is only about five minutes away from the
village by car.
In Fulford Village
you'll find restaurants, coffee bars, a gas station, a grocery, bakeries,
a post office, a variety of interesting shops and artists studios and
of course the ferry terminal, where you pick-up the boat to Swartz Bay
(Victoria). Nearby there's the Fulford Pub, two wineries and several Bed
& Breakfast establishments.
