Cycling

Soulange Canal - 35km, Riviere Beaudette - Pointe des Cascades, Monteregie

The trail follows the historic Soulange Canal from Lake St Francois to Lake St Louis. You can also reach the National Historic Site at Coteau du Lac. On route is the popular beach at Saint Zotique. From Les Cedres you can cross the river on a unique cycle ferry to the and take in the Regional Park du St Timothee (which also has a popular beach). If you cross over on the ferry a stint along highway 132 heading east will take you to the Beauharnois-Salaberry Cycling Trail.

Beauharnois-Salaberry Cycling Trail - 51km, Lac St Francis-Beauharnois, Monteregie

The trail follows the northern shore of the Beauharnois Canal below the City of Valleyfield. The canal connects Lake St Louis and Lake St Francois. You can reach the Soulange Canal Bike Trail if your willing to do a little road work. Follow the 132 west from Beauharnois to the cycle ferry in St Timothee and head over to Les Cedres. There is also a trail section along the south shore of the Canal from Lake St Francois to St Louis de Gonzaque. Work is underway to connect this to the tunnel at Beauharnois.

Campagnarde - 49km, Drummondville - Waterloo, Eastern Townships, Monteregie, Couer du Quebec, Eastern Townships

The trail is surfaced with crushed gravel and travels in a north/south direction.

Connects to the L' Estriade and if you follow the Route 112 to the east from Waterloo you can reach La Montagnarde. The trail skirts Yamaska Provincial Park.

The following trails connect (in the listed order) from Montreal to Sherbrooke in the Eastern Townships. There are a few breaks in the circuit which will require road travel including the section between the Chambly Canal Trail and the La Riveraine/Montee du Fort-Chambly in Brossard as well as the section of secondary highway along route 112 between Waterloo and the beginning of the Montagnarde in Stukley-Sud. In Waterloo the Campagnarde heads north and connects into Becancour and Trois Riviere. While the Grand Forches heads north from Sherbrooke eventually leading into Levis and Quebec City.

La Riveraine/Montee du Fort-Chambly (Route Verte-MRC Champlain) - 31km St Lambert- Bossard, Monteregie

Follows the St Lawrence River along the south shore from St Catherine to Longueil before heading south east towards Chambly. The trail provides some excellent views of the Montreal and Ile St Helene. Further to the east you can connect to the trail system in the Ile de Boucherville Provincial Park. Connects to the Montreal bicycle routes by bridges or you can ride the ferry. By way of route 112 you can connect into the Chambly Canal Trail.

Chambly Canal - 20km, Chambly - St Jean sur Richelieu (Iberville), Monteregie

The trail follows the Richelieu River and the historic Chambly canal where you ride the tow path. The trail passes through the Park des Rapids and you can access the Fort Chambly National Historic Site with a few extra pedels.

Ile de Boucherville Park - Located on islands in the St. Lawrence river just south of Montreal's east end. The park has hiking paths, cycling paths ( 20k in total ) which double as cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails in the winter. In the summer the park can be accesssed from the southshore and the Island of Montreal via water taxi. If you're driving take the 40 east to the 25 and head south to the tunnel and take the very first exit when you come out of the tunnel, which will bring you to the park entrance.

Ile de Boucherville Park

Monteregiades (Monteregiades I, II) - 48km, Granby - Iberville (St Jean sur Richelieu), Monteregie/Eastern Townships

The trail is fully paved, so if the day is particulary hot, you might want to take advantage of the beach in Farnham, La Plage Ouellette. There are plenty of picnic tables along the route. The trail connects to the L'Estriade in the east and the Chambly Canal in the west.

Hiking

Centre de la Nature du Mont Saint-Hilaire 14km, Novice, Intermediate The centre has 14km of hiking trails with several lookouts that provide a sweeping view of the area. The Rocky 1 follows close by Lac Hertel before heading up to the lookout. Many of the trails gain over 600ft.of altitude in a relatively short distance.

take the 40 east to the 25 and head south to the tunnel then take the 20 east on the southshore exit 115 turn right on Chemin Benoit (229) then left on Range de la Riviere N. and watch for the signs for the centre. Apparently the road into the park will be closed for a period in 2004, contact the centre for more information. Alternative access - follow highway 20 east and take exit 115 and head south. Take the branche to the left on Chemin Benoit, route 229 and turn right on the Range de la Riviere N and watch for the sign for the roud to your right. The website has downloadable trail maps. Lac St-Francois National Wildlife Area - Ramsar Site Renown for it's birding and wildlife viewing the 1347 hectare site has 10km of hiking trails, with some boardwalk areas. The office has bird and animal lists available and there is an observation tower along one of the trails to allow you to put them to use. You'll also find it to be an excellent area for sea kayaking or canoeing for that matter. Guided rabaska canoe trips and nature walks are available. Canoes are available for rent or you can bring your own but there is a launch fee. The areas birds include the Great Egret, Yellow Rail, Redhead, Great Egret, Least Bittern and Sedge Wren. From Montreal take the 20 west (or the 40 to the 540 to the 20) and exit at Sallabery de Vallyfield. Follow the 132 west (or cut through town if you know the route), cross the lift bridge and continue on along the shore of the St. Laurence. Head north on Chemin de Pointe Fraser just outside of Dundee. The NWA is about 50km southwest of Valleyfield. Friends of Lac St-Francois NWA

L'escapade (Sentiers du Mont Rigaud) 21km, Novice, Intermediate An extensive trail system on Rigaud mountain for horseback riding, hiking, snow shoeing (please don't walk on the cross country tracks) and cross country skiing. There is a new addition to the trail which takes you to the lookout at the top of the mountain. The trail can be accessed from several points including the Sucrerie-de-la-Montague. The mountain also has a ski hill and is know for its bird watching and autumn colours. From Montreal follow the 40 west taking the cut off towards Ottawa in Vaudreuil. Take exit 12 at Rigaud and head towards town on St-Jean Baptiste. If you take an immediate right on Chemin de la Marie you'll find parking, a trail head and a staging area for horses. A second option is to continue into town and turn left to the Parc Municipal where you'll find parking and trail access.

Mont St-Bruno Park (Provincial) - The park is located about 20km south of Montreal on the south shore. Several small lakes perched on the mountain are surrounded by forest and fields. Hiking trails swing around the lakes and provide several nice lookouts along the way. A well timed visit in the spring will provide you with an excellent show of flowers as the parks orchards come into bloom. The website has downloadable trail maps. Fee

Sentier du Ruissea Charette et de la Baie Bazeau - Novice, 2.4km - A short birding and nature trail which takes you into an observation tower overlooking a wetland. There are rest stops and interpetation plaques along the way. The new centre is opening June 24th, 2004 just in time to celebrates the towns centeniary. From Montreal take the 40 west and follow the split towards Ottawa in Vaudreuil. Take the last exit 1, the last exit in Quebec, and cross back over the highway on Interprovincial Road. The trail is on your right as you decend the last small hill into Pointe Fortune. Fee
